Dear SLPOA Inc. Members,
It’s a pleasure to share the October SLPOA Inc. newsletter with you and update you on what’s been happening and what will be happening at the beach club and on the estate in 2022. Since Government Covid-19 protocols have softened we have experienced a renewed and positive atmosphere at the club whilst we prepare for the busy winter season. We have worked hard this year to improve the experience at the club from staff and service to maintenance and improvements and similarly we look forward to completing a number of projects on the estate. It’s been a busy year with record memberships and short term rental fees illustrated by the below check-in statistics by customer type. The team and I look forward to seeing you all during the winter season and we welcome any comments you may have on the below points.
Annual Fees
The invoices for the annual fees for the next financial year Oct 1 2022 to Sept 30 2023 were emailed by Annell on Saturday 1st October 2022, to all owners and their managers.
NB: All funds are due by October 31st, 2022.
Cheques should be made payable to SLPOA Inc.
If funds are sent via wire transfer, please reference Invoice number(s) and Lot number(s). Please also confirm payments by emailing manager@sandylanepoa.com when funds have been sent.
Covid-19 Protocols
As per the latest Government protocols I’m delighted to confirm that mask wearing and sanitizing / temperature checks on arrival are now optional at the Sandy Lane Estate Beach Club however the email pre registration and reception check-in process remains unaltered.
Maintenance
Hot water solar panel
This item was cleaned and serviced which provides hot water to all bathrooms and showers. The kitchen has its own hot water heater, the electricity charges are not paid for by the membership.
Gutters
The gutters, which include their own mesh to prevent leaves from clogging up the drains, were cleaned and cleared.
Power washing
All walkways and cobbled sections were cleaned and power washed.
Clubhouse roof power washing
These works will commence in October. The majority of cabana roofs and roof tiles were replaced before Christmas last year however as the clubhouse roof is relatively new it just requires power washing as this stage.
Cabana cleaning
After the rainy season all elevations of all cabanas will be cleaned and touched up with paint as necessary.
Car park cleaning
As a consequence of the daily leaf blowing and raking of machinell apples and mahogany pods it’s inevitable that debris will build up over time at the edges of the car park, particularly by the large border stones. These areas have been cleaned along with the skip / garbage area and the gutter to the south of the car park.
Sunbed cleaning & cushion repairs
Due to high usage or old age some of the sunbeds needed cleaning and sunbed cushions needed attention or restitching in areas. These works have already commenced.
38 umbrellas repairs
Often the umbrella stems become bent as customers attempt to tilt them in order to provide shade in the late afternoon – also sometimes the wooded slats require attention. These umbrellas will be repaired in October.
Spray painting chairs
The clubhouse terrace chairs often get minor damage as the arms hit against the table tops so they will be repaired and all will be repainted prior to the season.
Mosquito management
We have agreed with Mosquito Kong that as well as the regular Thursday evening fogging that they will perform a regular inspection and report to assist with mosquito prevention at the beach club.

Improvements
Awning
As the sun drops in the late afternoon it is often very sunny and hot on the clubhouse terrace which makes it almost unusable. The board have therefore approved the installation of a manually retractable awning which should provide enough shade in the afternoon. This is not an extension of the clubhouse terrace floor or sitting area. The awning material will be of the highest marine grade sunbrellla in an off white.
Platforms
The large 9ft wide hexagonal tables with benches which are not used very often by the members are also showing signs of rot and are falling apart or are in need of repairing in areas. The tables have been removed from the beach and in their place we have installed a brick work platform much like the pathways and the platform that already exists on the northern end of the beach. A round coral table and chairs similar to the ones in the clubhouse will then be installed in these areas along with shade so members will have more comfortable and private areas to sit, meet, eat and drink.
New clubhouse cushions
The older light blue cushions have been replaced with new and more vibrant colours and have freshened up the general look and feel of the clubhouse. The foam within the cushions has also been replaced.
Grease trap
On inspection it was discovered that a makeshift plastic barrel was being used to collect any grease and debris from the bar drainage – this has now been replaced with a properly designed and installed grease trap.
Purchases
To assist with the busy weeks of the high season when there is a high demand for additional sunbeds the below have been ordered from our usual supplier.
30 sunbeds
30 sunbed cushions
30 umbrellas
30 side tables
4 sunbed cushion storage covers
New mooring
Due to bad weather and general wear and tear the raft mooring had to be serviced and cleaned and the outside mooring had to be replaced.
Staff changes
New concierge / receptionist
Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to Nadia as she was awarded a position with a cruise ship company operating out of Portugal. Nadia has been replaced by Tanneil who has a great deal of experience having worked at the Barbados Yacht Club. Tanneil will work in tandem with Andriena as front of house reception and concierge, and both will also assist with general management and operations.
New chef
Unfortunately we also had to say goodbye to Julius our resident chef who was offered an assistant management role at Hanschell Innis. Julius has been replaced by Michelle who has previously worked at Cin Cin, Whispers, Lone Star, the Barbados Yacht Club and La Terra and comes with a great deal of experience and knowledge.
New assistant chef
Charisse has also been appointed as assistant chef to support Noah in the same role and to assist Michelle when things are busier.
Estate Matters With West Coast Limited
Security owner initiative
In an effort to provide security on the estate a number of owners have volunteered to allow the security company to access their power and internet signal in order to install security cameras on poles in strategic locations on the estate. These cameras will not be looking into any properties and will only record movement on the estate roads. Any footage will not be monitored but in the event that there is an incident the recorded cloud based footage can be viewed by the police. The cameras which will be clearly visible and sign posted should also provide an effective deterrent. Should you wish to volunteer for this initiative we would be delighted to hear from you.
New road signs
We are sure most of you would be familiar with the rather basic road name signs on the estate. We are delighted to announce that all road names signs will be replaced with smart green metal signs and posts which will enhance the general feel of the estate. All road names signs will be identified as Sandy Lane Estate, Private Roads. As a courtesy any intersecting public or Sandy Lane Hotel roads will also be identified.
Safety mirrors
We have noticed that there are a number of junctions on the estate or when turning onto public roads which are a little tricky due to road contours, trees and landscaping so we have installed several 26 inch safety mirrors at the following locations:
West Ridge Road and West Ridge Gap #2
West Ridge Road and West Ridge Gap # 1
Vault Field Road and Mahogany Road
South Road and the coast road
Charley’s Road and Golf Club Road
Cooper Hill Road and Bennetts Road
Salters Road and Cemetery road
Harbin Alleyne Road and Cemetery Road
Mahogany Road and Bennetts Road
Road junction painting
Most of the road junction stop lines were in need or repainting and many junctions did not have any lines painted on them at all. We have now painted all road junction stop lines with 2 coats of road marking paint.
Road hump painting
All of the speed humps on the estate needed to be better identified and all have been painted in bright yellow road marking paint. As many of the speed bumps have uneven edges at the road surface we opted to include a 2 inch border either side of each speed hump so all edges are clean and uniform throughout the estate.
Due to the high usage of certain estate roads such as Salters Road, Harbin Alleyne Road and Mahogany Road the painting or road junction lines and speed pumps will need repeating as required throughout the year.
Pot hole and road repairs
There are a number of pot holes on the estate or areas where road repairs are required. Whilst we wait for confirmation of more significant improvements to the roads we are about to embark on a program of pot hole and road damage repairs throughout the estate.
Maintenance team arrangement
The estate road cleaning crew, under the direction of Trevor, have been reappointed on a six month agreement once there is proper reporting on what roads have been addressed, how and when. The crew will also shortly be provided with branded safety vests so they can be identified when working on the estate roads.
Garbage collection log
As we continue to work with the government and private garbage collection teams we have started to keep a log to ensure that there is sufficient coverage each week – so the private collection service has to work around when the government service is on the estate.
I hope you have found the above update useful however if you have any questions or concerns please do let me know.
