SLPOA Inc.
Current status of beach renourishment project
- Following hurricane Beryl and subsequent storms and swells we lost approximately 50% of the flat area of the beach where the sun beds go – more or less all the sand from the line of coconut trees to the ocean and the sand on the ocean floor had been lost.
- All coconut trees had also fallen into the sea putting the remaining beach at risk of further erosion.
- Initially we replanted the trees and created protective buckets around the root systems to help preserve the trees and prevent further beach erosion.
- In late September and over approximately 2 weeks of intense works hundreds of truckloads of sand was deposited and dispersed along the hotel and SLPOA beaches.
- At the end the works approximately 70% of the flat beach was returned as it was not possible to create a natural and gradual slope into the sea as this would require a complete return of the sand that had been removed from the ocean floor.
- As there was a minimal slope from the waves to the newly deposited sand, waves / swells cut away the newly deposited sand creating an upper and lower beach.
- Efforts to reduce the severity of the edge to the upper beach resulted in more sand being taken away by the waves / swells.
- Most of the weather which has been relentless since the hurricane came from the south which took away further sand from the upper beach.
- Thankfully the sand to the ocean floor / rock bed was replaced and sand slowly started to return to the lower beach so the edge of the upper beach started to reduce in height.
- Over the last week or so we have experienced a new and aggressive swell and as a consequence more sand has been deposited onto the lower beach and the ocean floor further improving the situation.
- Whilst not a complete success, we are far better off than we would have been if the beach renourishment works had not taken place as we now have a minimal edge to the upper beach as more sand has returned to the lower beach, safe and easy entry into the sea and a sandy bottom to the ocean floor rather than the previously exposed and dangerous rock bed.
- We have also managed to save the majority of the coconut trees which helped preserve the sand when the initial storms and swells hit
- I am delighted to confirm that Sandy Lane Hotel and CO Williams have almost completed their repair works to the north end access.

I would like to request that all owners both new and old abide by this important neighbourly code of conduct.
- As an extension of the point above we have also noticed a marked increase in the amount of cars parked on the estate which is a breach of the estate’s code of conduct. Please could I ask that all owner and property managers arrange for all staff, contractor and supplier parking to occur within the property boundaries.
- It is not WCL’s responsibility to trim trees which are overhanging the estate roads or neighboring property. Please could I ask that all owners start requesting that their managers or gardeners regularly check and organize the trimming of boundary trees.
